I’ll be honest. When I first began offering on-line counseling a few years ago, I was a bit nervous. I felt somewhat bewildered by the concept of it all and found myself wondering – How does on-line counseling work? Won’t this seem a bit awkward? Will people be able to feel at ease, speaking to a stranger via a computer screen? While all these questions are of course valid, I’ve honestly been pleasantly surprised. I’d like to tell you a little about how I’ve come to truly love on-line therapy. Here’s the thing… It tends to be a much more informal, casual setting when compared to the typical office visit. Clients are able to be in a place of their choosing. I’ve been able to have virtual meetings with others at their home, their vehicle, or even their office. If they need a moment to tend to the kids, take care of the dog, grab a cup of coffee, we just flow with it. Real-life happens, and that can truly add to the richness of the therapy experience.
As human beings, we all live and learn within context. And as a therapist, I’ve found it incredibly helpful, enjoyable and truly honoring to be able to sit with clients virtually while they prepare a quick meal for their young child, introduce me to a family member if they so choose, or even take a lunch break in their vehicle.
I find that during our current global situation, we have the innate capability to exercise creativity and flexibility in our thinking and in our behaviors. And what better place to practice that than during a counseling appointment?
