Many couples in Grand Rapids, MI are looking for a little tune-up in their communication so that they can feel loved and safe with one another again. If you are a couple that has been feeling a little distant, it may be wise to consider working on communication skills as research has shown that communication between couples very much dictates relationship satisfaction. While this class will not cover individual gripes or complaints, it will present you with relationship skills and options to talk about these in private, to help you possibly move past those. Start your love renewal in a small and safe class.

What: Couples Skill Building Class in Grand Rapids, MI at Health for Life Counseling.

Who: All Couples / Dyads / Partners (Open to LGBTQ+ folx)

Starts: Mondays (Waitlist is forming–call for details)

When: 5:30pm-7pm

Length: 8 Weeks

Cost: $50 per person weekly/ $100 weekly for a couple (Includes Skill Building Booklet)

Details: Couples will have the opportunity to enhance their relationship through an 8-week, skill-building class using Gottman-based, Existential, and Solution-Focused methods. Throughout the 8-weeks, couples will learn and be able to practice skills based on the Stress Response Cycle, Coping skills and CoRegulation, Gottman Communication Methods, Emotional Intelligence, Assumption Checking, and Meeting Bids for Connection. This skills class is not a replacement for individual or couple’s counseling but is to help couples navigate better ways to respond to one another.

Note: This is not “Group Therapy” – you will not have to talk about your personal relationship. You will have the opportunity to learn skills, practice the skills, and ask questions.
These are some of the concepts you will learn and be able to apply to your relationship:

  • Education on Fight-or-Flight-Freeze-Fawn Responses in Relationships (Lid Flipping)
  • Explain the different types of stress responses and how they can manifest in relationships.
  • Provide coping skills for managing stress and preventing lid flipping.
  • Gottman-Rapport Communication Method
  • Teach the couple the Gottman-Rapport Communication Method, which is a structured approach to expressing feelings and needs in a respectful and constructive manner.
  • Practice the method with the couple to help them develop effective communication skills.
  • Emotional Literacy
  • Help the couple identify and understand their own emotions and those of their partner.
  • Develop strategies for expressing and managing emotions in a healthy way.
  • Assumption Checking
  • Teach the couple how to check their assumptions about each other’s thoughts and feelings to avoid misunderstandings.
  • Encourage open and honest communication to prevent misinterpretation
  • Love Languages: Meeting Bids for Attention
  • Introduce the concept of love languages and help the couple identify their primary love languages.
  • Encourage the couple to express love and appreciation for each other in ways that resonate with their partner’s love language.
